About Us

Liber Apertus Press publishes a series of books related to California explorers and California history. Our newest series is focused on reissuing noteworthy books that are in demand and no longer easily available. The objective is to make these books accessible to readers who will appreciate the opportunity to read and own these books at a reasonable price. The first title in the new series is General Printing, which has been one of the top ten most sought out-of-print books for several years. Several more titles in a variety of subject areas are in the works.

The press is operated by Matt Kelsey, formerly the publisher of Backbeat Books, CMP Books, and Miller Freeman Books. Matt also operates a letterpress workshop.

The founder of Liber Apertus Press is Harry Kelsey, an historian who has written a number of noted biographies and historical works, including Sir Francis Drake: The Queen's Pirate and Sir John Hawkins: Queen Elizabeth's Slave Trader, both published by Yale University Press.
